Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has mourned former Lugari MP and veteran Kenyan politician Cyrus Jirongo, saying he only recently learnt of his death.

In a message shared on Monday, September 21, 2026, Museveni said he was saddened to learn that Jirongo died in a road accident in December 2025.

“I have just learnt that Senator Cyrus Jirongo passed away last December in a motor accident. I was not aware that he had died,” Museveni said.

The Ugandan president described Jirongo as a good and patriotic leader who served Kenya with dedication.

“This is very sad. Jirongo was a good and patriotic leader who served his country with dedication. We shall miss him,” he added.

Museveni extended his condolences to Jirongo’s family, relatives, friends and Kenyans.

“My condolences go to his family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Jirongo alerted Museveni over fuel procurement

Museveni’s tribute came a day after he revealed that Jirongo had alerted him about Uganda’s use of middlemen in petroleum procurement.

According to Museveni, Jirongo raised the issue around 2019, prompting him to task then Energy Minister Irene Muloni with addressing the matter.

“It was a Kenyan Senator called Jirongo who told me this around 2019. I immediately tasked the then Minister Irene Muloni to sort out that mess,” Museveni said.

The head of state said he was unaware that Uganda was procuring petroleum products through middlemen in Kenya through a tendering process.

He questioned why Uganda was buying fuel through traders instead of dealing directly with refiners and bulk suppliers.

“The thing to do is for the country to buy from the refiners. Those who are refining, why do you buy from traders?” he said.

The revelation came as Uganda continues to adjust its petroleum import arrangements, with the Uganda National Oil Company taking a greater role in directly importing petroleum products and supplying oil marketing companies.
